Agreement is Trailstone’s first announced deal in Japan as the company rapidly expands its Japanese operations to help renewable energy asset owners navigate changing market rules and meet robust environmental goals.

TOKYO 1st September 2023 — Trailstone GK (“Trailstone”), a global energy and technology company, announced today that it has signed a balancing services agreement with Marubeni Power Retail Corporation (“Marubeni PRC”) in Japan with the intention to expand the partnership further if the initial agreement proves successful. Through this agreement, Trailstone will utilize its market access, expertise, and proprietary renewables optimization platform to provide day-ahead power supply forecasting for Marubeni PRC’s assets and manage imbalance risk.

Takuya Kamisago, General Manager, Commercial at Trailstone said: “Our agreement with Marubeni PRC is just the beginning of what we hope will be a longstanding, successful partnership. We are particularly proud that our first announced deal in Japan is with a company such as Marubeni that has been an integral part of the Japanese power system for decades.”

Akihiro Matsuta, Lead Originator at Marubeni PRC said: “We look forward to working with Trailstone to optimize solar power generation and revenues. Thorough this agreement, we aim to enhance and expand its knowledge of the renewable energy aggregation business and will contribute to the realization of a decarbonized and sustainable society in Japan.

Trailstone’s proprietary optimization platform uses robust weather models, data analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to better predict renewable energy supply and optimize returns for asset owners. Trailstone’s experienced risk management and trading teams use the platform to manage imbalances caused by weather related production risks, lowering the barriers to entry for asset developers and enabling the deployment of more wind and solar generation. At the grid level, improving the effectiveness and efficiency with which renewables are managed enables more assets to connect to the grid, lowering reserve requirements and costs, all of which provide a better environment for the end consumer.

Trailstone entered the Japanese market in 2023 in response to changes in market designs and robust support for renewable energy from Japanese governments and businesses. In addition to balancing services, Trailstone offers a suite of renewable energy products to help asset owners and managers reduce risk and optimize returns, including route to market Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and corporate PPA products. Trailstone’s Japanese office is located at 2-4-1 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku NS Building 23F, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 163-0823 Japan, and is the company’s ninth office and first in Asia.
